After moving from Manchester United in 2006, Van Nistelrooy immediately became *Los Blancos'* primary goal-scoring machine. During the 2007/2008 season, he wore the number 17 shirt (having worn number 9 in his debut season—a number later taken by Cristiano Ronaldo). Although hampered by injuries in the second half of the season, his clinical finishing proved crucial in helping Real Madrid maintain their dominance in domestic competition.
